Skerries south harbour channel will be improved to allow better access to the current ferry Filla which until now has been unable to use the entrance since her debut on the service in 2003.
A rocky outcrop will be removed at a cost of £300,000 allowing a deeper channel for the ship.
The vessel which currently has to use the north entrance only will be able to provide a more reliable service which at times in bad weather has had to be suspended when the north entrance closes, effectively cutting off the small community.
