Today for what is believed to be a first, Shetland is visited by a cruise liner on an official round the world cruise.

The Sun Princess started off her world voyage in May from Sydney, Australia, and after calling along in the far east proceeded to transit the Suez canal and visit ports in the Mediterranean before landing in Northern Europe. After Shetland the vessel goes to Iceland , then onwards to New York, Panama Canal, before working her way back to Australia via the Pacific Ocean.

Built in 1995 Sun Princess at the time was one of the world's biggest liners. The lead vessel of this class ship in the Princess cruises fleet is on her maiden call to Lerwick. Previously her sister ship Sea Princess visited Lerwick on a few calls.
