FAIR ISLE IMPROVEMENTS

North Haven harbour in Fair Isle is in line to recieve improved facilites if all goes to plan.

Firstly at the request of the skipper of the local ferry Good Shepherd a new white navigational light is to be installed to aid mariners entering the harbour.

The tight harbour as mentioned in a previous post is also attracting a fair degree of passenger ships and this has been reflected in this years total number of cruise ships which called. The 11 in total that visited had to anchor offshore whilst passengers were tendered to the island. Passengers land on a slippery concrete slip, and whilst this is not ideal, the Shetland Islands Council plans to put in safety railings to aid disembarkation ashore.

The harbour and it's approach is also in line for a hydrgraphic survey to assess the possible impact of shifting sands around the area.

NORWEGIAN JEWEL BREAKS RECORDS

A new milestone was achieved for Lerwick Harbour on Friday as the largest ever liner visited the port. The Norwegian Jewel arrived from Dover with 2,000 passengers onboard on her way to New York as part of a re-positioning cruise.

The trend of bigger liners shows no end and the Jewel will hold the title only briefly as there are bigger ships due next year. Firstly the Costa Magica is booked in for two visits but even she will be surpassed by the Crown Princess in September 2009.

Provisionally there are 33 cruise ships due next year with that figure set to rise further.

GREENHEAD BASE

Above shows the regular visitor to Lerwick Harbour REM Supplier loading cargo for the rig MCP-01 Regalia. In the background can be seen the dredging operation nearing completion as the last high spots are dug out and loaded into the motor hopper Long Sand.

In the foreground shows the offshore decomissioning pad and the scrap metal remains of the module support frame from the Frigg field awaiting uplift. It is hoped that more offshore business will be heading Shetland's way in the not to distant future.

SHETLAND HUB ON HOLD

A plan by a local businessman to start an international freight service linking Norway with the UK Mainland and Shetland has been delayed.

John White had hoped to secure EU funding for the route which would have gone towards purchasing a freight vessel he had been looking at.

Called Norshukon, the route would help take freight off Europe's roads, and would compliment the NorthLink service linking the Northern Isles with Aberdeen.

It is hoped that this venture can realise it's full potential after Shetland lost it's connection with Norway after Smyril Line pulled out.

The outcome of the proposal will be concluded next year.

DREDGING UP CLOSE

As dredging works in Lerwick Harbour continue apace this view shows the material being lifted from the north channel. After the seabed is blasted the hopper barge takes the spoil and rock out to a pre agreed dumping zone where it is disposed of. The £12Million programme is due to finish later in the Autumn.
