SHETLAND HUB ON HOLD

A plan by a local businessman to start an international freight service linking Norway with the UK Mainland and Shetland has been delayed.

John White had hoped to secure EU funding for the route which would have gone towards purchasing a freight vessel he had been looking at.

Called Norshukon, the route would help take freight off Europe's roads, and would compliment the NorthLink service linking the Northern Isles with Aberdeen.

It is hoped that this venture can realise it's full potential after Shetland lost it's connection with Norway after Smyril Line pulled out.

The outcome of the proposal will be concluded next year.
