Christmas storms cause damage

The prolonged period of disturbed weather in the Northern parts of Scotland continues.

Shipping has mainly been unaffected with most ships moored up for the Christmas break. NorthLink's ferry service has run to schedule with the Hrossey only an hour late in Lerwick this morning despite strong winds overnight.

The damage was mostly done on land with roofs blown off, and debris thrown around. However several salmon cages broke from their moorings at the south end of Unst and have been reported to have drifted over 30 miles east of the islands. They were spotted by the Sumburgh based coastguard helicopter earlier in the day. The cages which are full of fully grown salmon are hoped to be recoverable.

Another deep depression is due to swing in from the Atlantic tomorrow evening, however the worst of the winds are projected to affect mainland Scotland as the islands should be over the centre of the low this time.
