Pollution fears after wrecking

Following the sinking on Tuesday evening of the Banff registered trawler Prospect just to the north of Lerwick Harbour fear are growing of a potential pollution situation.

The Prospect had made a routine call to land fish, take provisions, and most worryingly refuel with up to 22,000 litres of marine gas oil when it went down. Local tour operators have expressed concern for local wildlife in the area, including a resident colony of seals that frequent the sinking site.

Lerwick Port Authority are in discussions with the vessels insurer to determine salvage possibilities, and removal of the fuel which is first priority. Divers were sent down yesterday to check the wreck for signs of leakage.  The depth of water is 15 metres close into the shore which should make recovery work slightly more easier.
