Lerwick Port Authority (LPA) said yesterday that they intend to raise the sunken Banff trawler Prospect from the seabed as early as next week. Prospect lies at a depth of 15 metres on her starboard side just outside the main navigational channel into the north entrance of Lerwick Harbour.
The move follows concern over fuel oil in the vessels tanks that could escape, polluting the wider environment.
Yesterday divers recovered salvage pumps from the vessel, and plugged vents that fuel was escaping from. The plan will be to patch the hole on the vessel's port side and lift her with air bags which are in the process of being sourced from the Mainland.
Favourable weather conditions ahead have also made the decision to continue with the salvage. LPA are in contact with the vessels insurers as developments continue.
